Local SEO helps your business appear when people nearby search for what you offer, in Google Search and on Google Maps. The core steps are: claim and verify your Google Business Profile, fill it in completely, keep your name, address and phone number consistent everywhere, collect honest reviews, add local keywords to your website, and track calls and direction requests.
How does Google rank local results?
Google says local results are based mainly on three factors:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for. A complete, detailed profile helps Google understand what you do.
- Distance: how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location they mention.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, which is influenced by reviews, ratings and links from other websites.
Google also states that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. The checklist below works on all three factors.
The checklist
1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Search for your business name on Google and Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one at business.google.com. Then complete verification, because unverified profiles have limited visibility and cannot be fully managed. The verification method depends on your business and location.
2. Choose the right primary category
The main category tells Google what you are. Choose the most specific one, for example "Dental clinic" and not just "Health". Add secondary categories only if they are true.
3. Fill in every field accurately
Add your exact business name (as it appears on your signboard, without keywords added), full address, service areas if you travel to customers, phone number, website, opening hours and special hours for holidays. Add attributes such as payment methods, parking or wheelchair access if they apply. Accuracy matters, because wrong hours and addresses frustrate customers and can lead to profile problems.
4. List your services and products
Add each service or product with a short description and, if possible, a price or range. This helps your profile match more specific searches.
5. Add real photos and videos
Upload clear photos of your storefront, inside, team, products and work. Customers trust profiles with real images. Add new photos regularly.
6. Ask for reviews and reply to all of them
Reviews influence both ranking and trust. Ask happy customers to review you, in person or by sending your review link on WhatsApp after a job. Never buy reviews, offer rewards for positive reviews or review your own business, because Google can remove them and penalise your profile. Reply politely to every review, including negative ones. Describe what you will do to fix the problem and offer to continue the conversation privately.
7. Keep your name, address and phone consistent
Search engines compare information across the web. Use exactly the same business name, address format and phone number on your website, social pages and directories. Fix old listings with wrong details.
8. Get listed in trusted directories
List your business in genuine Pakistani and industry directories, chambers of commerce and local business sites where customers actually look. Quality is more important than quantity, so skip spammy directories.
9. Add local keywords to your website
Make sure your site says where you operate. Put the city and area in your page titles, headings, contact page and footer where natural, for example "Plumbing services in Gulberg, Lahore". If you serve several areas, create a separate useful page for each one, with real details and not copied text. Embed a map on your contact page.
10. Create a page for each service
A page for each service helps you rank for each search, and gives your Business Profile a better page to link to. See our SEO for beginners guide for how to write them.
11. Make your website fast on mobile
Most local searches happen on phones, often while people are on the move. A slow page loses the customer. Aim for the main content to load in under 2.5 seconds on a normal mobile connection.
12. Add a clear way to contact you
Put a click-to-call button and a WhatsApp link at the top of each page. The easier it is to reach you, the more enquiries you get.
13. Post updates regularly
Use Business Profile posts for offers, events and news, and keep your hours and services current.
14. Track the results
In your Business Profile, check how many people called you, asked for directions or visited your website. In Google Search Console, check which local searches bring visitors. Review monthly and fix what is not working.
What local SEO mistakes should you avoid?
- Adding keywords to your business name.
- Creating several profiles for the same location.
- Using a fake address or a virtual office as a storefront.
- Ignoring negative reviews.
- Letting hours go out of date.
- Copying the same page text for every area.
Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take?
Profile improvements can show results within weeks, while competitive searches take months. Results depend on competition and the strength of your reviews.
Do I need a website for local SEO?
It is strongly recommended. A website gives Google more information about you and gives customers more detail. See how much a website costs in Pakistan.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no fixed number. Steady, recent, honest reviews matter more than a one-time burst.
Can I pay to rank higher on Google Maps?
No. Google states that you cannot pay for a better local ranking. You can run Google Ads separately, which are labelled as ads.
What if I have no shop?
If you serve customers at their location, you can set a service area. Do not use a fake address.
